The Italian company integrating technical solutions in the field of IoT uses Unipi Patron to run its own software platform in the field of industrial automation. This solution has helped increase efficiency in livestock production. Using OnLogic IoT software, the customer gained an intelligent system for the cooling environment.

The Italian company Innovation system S.r.l. specializes in the design and construction of hardware and software for management, administration and supervision of technological systems. They are particularly interested in the areas of system integration, IoT, Energy Efficiency, Machine Learning and Big Data.

Challenge



Company Innovation System developed their flagship product the OnLogic system for programming industrial controllers. The OnLogic system is fully compliant with the IEC 61131-3 standard. They decided to offer it to customers together with a high-performance PLC and thus simplify the possibility of intelligent technology automation. However, the hardware had to have numerous parameters:

  • An open platform running the Linux operating system 
  • Simple application access to peripherals (ModbusTCP) 
  • Powerful processor with eMMC memory, offering higher reliability than, for example, an inserted microSD card 
  • 1-Wire bus 
  • Ethernet port for network communication 
  • RS485 and RS232 serial lines 

Solution 

Based on the requirements, the company chose Unipi Patron S107, which not only meet all parameters, but also offers the option of custom solutions directly for the specific needs of the project.

The Unipi hardware was a good fit for the customer due to its compact design, serial interface, and many useful inputs and outputs for better field operation.

In addition, Unipi units provide ideal platform for OnLogic solution that implements:

  • Support for 5 programming and graphic languages (IL, ST, LD, FBD, SFC) according to IEC 61131-3 standard 
  • An integrated simulation environment that allows you to run and test the application first on a computer and then upload it directly to the PLC 
  • Functional real-time debugging that offers monitoring, running and graphical visualization, so you have complete control and overview of the system 
  • Communication protocols (TCP/IP, Modbus, CanOpen, etc.) 
  • Node-RED integration using libraries

Innovation system has helped its customer to increase efficiency in the livestock industry with the Patron S107 units. Using OnLogic and OnSystem IoT software, the company developed an innovative solution for a customer needing an intelligent refrigeration environment system.  

The system uses the Patron S107 as centralized control hardware, allowing direct control of cooling devices. This technology can automatically adapt the thermal conditions and humidity to the environmental conditions, thus reducing energy waste.

For example, if the external temperature is low, their IoT platform can reduce the power of the cooling devices, saving energy. Instead, if the external temperature is high, the system can increase the power of the cooling devices, ensuring a comfortable environment for the animals.

Innovation System's platform goes beyond automating cooling device control by providing a comprehensive remote monitoring system. Farmers can keep track of real-time environmental data through a web application, ensuring optimal conditions for animals and controlling all plants. Moreover, the platform empowers users to intervene in the system manually, customizing control based on the farm's specific needs.

With the system in place, the customer can monitor the installation remotely and, in the event of anomalies, be able to connect and view the status of their farms to take immediate action if problems arise that may affect animal welfare.

Next steps

The company is deploying new Unipi Patron and Unipi Gate models for the OnLogic system and is planning a new system expansion with new additional features.

The customer implements additional installations related to the monitoring of the coolers, with the possibility to control the automatic opening and closing of windows for air passage instead of coolers. The next project is the installation of additional sensors to enable indoor air quality monitoring.
